Ze Germans are groovy. They’ve got the right idea. Selbstversorgung means Self-sustainability. Here in Australia there’s a constant conversation about drought and the effect that has on farming. To an outsider it seems obvious. The European farming methods used over the past couple of centuries don’t work here. Find a new way to farm.
The biggest problem is water. There isn’t as much water in this continent as there is in Europe. So if you clear a big field and plant wheat you’re going to need a shitload of water to get it to grow. Worse, that water will evaporate quickly from the large surface area of the field. Water is a scarce resource. This dreadful waste of it has resulted in disasters like the Murray Darling Basin.
Self-sustainability and self-sufficiency are overlapping states of being in which a person needs little or no help from, others. Self-sufficiency entails the self being enough, and a self-sustaining entity can maintain self-sufficiency indefinitely.wikipedia
